Check out this article for all the details: "Brazil says Amazon deforestation down to lowest level."
It is not a sure thing however and even at the lowest numbers the toll is still high for 2011 over 4349 square miles or (for those of you who know how large an acre is) 2,783,360 acres or roughly the size of the state of Connecticut. was deforested.
We are in the midst of an economic downturn (again). What can you do for FREE to help the rainforest?
*Buy what you normally buy. . . but buy local. For example: Meat. Most of the land in the rainforest is deforested to make room for cattle. Buy local organic meat and dairy products.
Need help finding a local source? Check out this website: Local Harvest/Farmers in the United States.
Want to donate money or time? Here are some great organizations to support! You can protect the rainforest and the thousands of species it contains!!
COOL Earth -- the English on the other side of the pond have got it going on!! This site is full of ideas! They've protected over 200,000 acres of rainforest!
Rainforest Alliance -- The RA has great educational programs for kids! According to their website "The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior."
World Wildlife Fund --One of the largest environmental organizations. Over the years I've had differing views of the WWF (especially when they kept sending me stickers that were made of paper and non-recyclable). However, they do do a lot of great things for the environment, and one of their top topics is the rainforest.
