Gardening in Black

Ok. Ok. My garden is in black this year.....well it was in black last year too. It is because no one is doing it that way and I thought it would be cool. A gothic garden. It is FUN! today I found black pansies...............and I added them to my black tulips, black batchelor buttons, and black leafed elderberry, mustard, snapdragons, and geraniums. It definitely has a slightly 'dark' feeling to it. What is fun is that any color that is there is eccentuated. I'll upload photos soon. Here is to gardening. TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE.
On Mother's Day I have a black calla lilly bulb I need to plant. woooohooo!

Composting ALL THE NEWS on KUOW

Yesterday composting made it onto the news! KUOW the local public radio station and the local "conversation" was devoted to how Seattle is making waves when it comes to composting all of its foodwaste! Starting next spring 2009 Seattle will be recycling nearly every type of plastic, tin, steel, aluminum, and glass in addition to food waste that WILL INCLUDE DAIRY and MEAT products!!
Seattle's "GREEN-NESS" is starting to percolate around the country. Check out this newspaper article that I found in a FLORIDA press, We know our trash. We want to conserve. WE UNDERSTAND that this Earth is the only one we've got, and in the words of the Dali Lama in his speech given at the UW two weeks ago: "The moon is really pretty to look at, but it would not make a very good home."

Check out this website for reusable bags (located in Chicago, Illinois). I like the 'tiny titan' it looks like it would fit in a purse or back pocket. WE CAN DO THIS!

Go Spud and Corn Ware!

Go COMPOSTABLE FOODWARE! http://www.ecoproducts.com/ these products are certified COMPOSTABLE. awesome!

The City of Seattle sends all of its compostable waste to Cedar Composting. http://www.cedar-grove.com/

Their compostable waste is turned into compost for the garden and then sold as compost to places like Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart. You've seen it! I've seen it too! How COOL!

University of Washington COMPOSTS

The University of Washington is composting FOOD WASTE. With over 50,000 students, faculty and staff that is akin to a city composting all of its food waste. To top it off the UW has replaced all of the silverware with COMPOSTABLE SILVERWARE. Yes, they are compostable. The school has also removed styrofoam from the menu and now has only PAPER PLATES/CUPS which are also COMPOSTABLE.
All over the campus COMPOSTING BINS have popped up. They are green with specail compostable liners. GO HUSKIES!
Check out the UW facilities website for all the info: http://www.washington.edu/admin/recycling/food_waste.php

Welcome to COMPOST THIS!

My sister has said that I really should be blogging all the stuff I tell her and so I decided to come up with this blog. COMPOST THIS is a blog devoted to composting , recycling and other environmentally friendly things we can do! It may also have some black gardening ideas (yes its goth, and no I'm not) and random other things.

To begin with I thought I would mention the cool thing that Seattle is doing. APARTMENTS can COMPOST their waste in the YARD WASTE CONTAINERS. my apartment in the Capitol hill neighboorhood of Seattle has reduced the size of our garbage dumpster and because all of us put the food waste in the bin instead of in the garbage...........and we RECYCLE everything!

Live in Seattle? Want to know more? CUT YOUR WASTE IN HALF! Not only that if you take out the food waste separtately IT DOESN't smell! Your garbage can stays clean and you don't have a wierd odor coming from the food disposal! YAHOOOOOO!

here is a website : Seattle City composting/yard waste.......http://www.seattle.gov/util/Services/Yard/Yard_Waste_Collection/index.asp
