COMPOSTIN' COMPANIES: Green Investing. Put Your Money Where the Environment Is

Green Investing: A Guide to Making Money through Environment-Friendly StocksInvesting in a Sustainable World: Why GREEN Is the New Color of Money on Wall StreetThe Green Investing HandbookI've decided to do a few posts on cool, green, revolutionary companies I want to invest in.  So, like the name of my blog I've decided to focus on COMPOSTABLE products and the companies that make them.

I've been interested in the composting revolution since 2007 when I witnessed my first 'compostable spoon' at the University of Washington in Seattle.  It was a prototype. It was beige and if you ate anything hot (like soup) with it, the spoon would bend and you would need to get a new one.  Now they are brown, thick, hard, and appear to be more like plastic than a composite made of potato, corn, or other starch.

University of Washington students started a movement a couple years ago.  They named themselves SEED (Students Expressing Environmental Dedication). And their goal at that time?  To make the the University of Washington the first campus to have zero waste.  They have nearly succeeded.  All campus areas have compost bins, recycling bins, and smaller trash bins.  The packaging is all COMPOSTABLE.

Well two years after the UW changed the way they dealt with waste, the City of Seattle came on board with yard waste containers that accepted 'greens'.  After another year they started composting everything potato peelings to chickenbones ......anything that you could eat can go in a yard waste container along with paper that has been soiled with food, and compostable containers.  Well, then in 2010, Seattle changed the laws on styrofoam and non-compostable products for delivery and take out.  All restaurants have to compost their food waste and provide customers with compostable food containers.

Needless to say I think these companies will become as common as apple pie in the next few years.

"WHO'S WHO and WHAT'S WHAT in COMPOSTABLE PRODUCTS --it is a bit outdated (2007) but lists the companies that were around then.  Later in another post, I'll list the ones that are still doing business!

Here is one that was on the list and still going strong!

Nature-tech  produces compostable products, like clear containers for food,  silverware etc.  They are part of Northern Technologies International Corporation (NTIC) --It is listed and traded on the open market.  Check it out!!
